What is a plea bargain?
Plea bargaining is where, while your case is pending, your attorney can work with the prosecutor for the state and see if there’s a way to settle your case favorably. For example, if you’re facing twenty years in prison and you prefer not to do twenty years in prison, you can perhaps reach an agreement where you don’t go to prison, maybe for not so long or maybe not at all and you get probation. So plea bargaining is where you can use the chips that you have in your case, the things that may help you in your case, and use them as leverage to get yourself a better deal to get you something that you can live with.
